What is domain monitoring?
Domain monitoring is the automated, continuous tracking of a domain name's registration status, expiry date, ownership, DNS records and SSL certificate, with an alert sent the moment any of them change. It answers one question on a schedule: is this domain still exactly as I left it?
A registrar dashboard only shows the domains inside that one account, and only when you log in. An uptime monitor pings a URL and tells you after the site is already down. Neither watches the registry record itself, which is where the failures that matter start. A domain slips into grace, a nameserver is quietly repointed, a certificate renewal silently fails, or a name you have wanted for two years is finally released at 3am.

Every expiring domain moves through the same five registry stages. Each one has a different deadline and a different remedy, so each one gets its own alert and its own check frequency.

Alerts people still read in month six
Most monitoring fails socially, not technically. It fires often enough that the team mutes the channel, and the one alert that mattered arrives in a muted channel. So the default here is quiet: nothing is sent unless a value actually changed against the last confirmed state, and every change is re-checked before it becomes a notification.
Each domain carries its own rules. A client's production domain can escalate to Slack and a webhook at the first status change, while a parked name you might renew only needs a line in the weekly digest.

What is a domain monitoring service, and how does Domainyze do it?
A domain monitoring service checks a domain's public registry record on a schedule and tells you when something changes. Domainyze queries RDAP first and falls back to WHOIS, stores the last confirmed answer, and alerts on the difference rather than on the value: status, expiry, registrar of record, transfer lock and nameserver delegation. On a name you are waiting on, checks run every 6 hours on paid plans and every 12 hours on Free, tightening to as often as every minute as a drop approaches. What exactly does domain monitoring cover?
Eight signals: registration status, registry expiry date, registrar of record and transfer lock, nameserver delegation, the A, AAAA, MX, NS, SOA, TXT and CAA records, mail authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC), the SSL certificate served on your hostnames, and live availability for names you are waiting on. The first four are on every plan. The DNS and certificate lanes are a paid feature.
Can I monitor domains registered at GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Cloudflare?
Yes, any registrar, and domains you do not own at all. Monitoring reads public registry and DNS data from outside, so the registrar is irrelevant and no login is involved. That also means you can watch a competitor's domain, a client's domain before you take over their account, or a name you would like to own one day.
Does this require root server access or DNS modifications?
No. There is no agent, no nameserver change, and no API key to hand over. Everything is read from public sources: registry RDAP and WHOIS, authoritative DNS, and an external TLS handshake. That is deliberate, because the point is to see your domain the way the rest of the internet sees it rather than the way your own infrastructure believes it is configured.
How often does the system check my domains?
It depends on what the name is to you. On a name you are waiting on, registry data is checked every 6 hours on paid plans and every 12 hours on Free, and the cadence tightens automatically as the name moves toward release: in the window before an observed drop it runs as often as every 2 minutes on Pro and every minute on Business, while Free tightens to every 6 hours. On a name you already own the registry lane is steady rather than escalating, because a change there is somebody else acting on your name and nothing in the schedule can anticipate it, so the fast coverage is the delegation lane, the certificate lane and your renewal reminders. DNS zone checks and certificate handshakes are included with paid plans.
What alerts are sent for domain status changes?
Expiry reminders across the runway your plan buys; a status-change alert on every lifecycle transition (active, expired, redemption, pending delete, available); registrar and transfer-lock changes; nameserver delegation changes; and an availability alert the second a watched name is released. Each type can be switched on or off per domain.
Will I get flooded with notifications?
No. Alerts are deduplicated against the transition that produced them, so a domain that sits in the same state for a month produces one alert rather than sixty. Every detected change is re-confirmed against a second independent lookup before it is sent, which filters out the resolver glitches and cache artefacts that make simpler tools cry wolf.
Can I share access to my monitored portfolio?
Business plans support client tagging and grouping, per-group webhooks, and CSV export, so an agency can hand a client a clean report without giving them the whole portfolio.
What is the difference between the redemption period and pending delete?
During redemption, roughly 30 days after deletion at the registrar, the original owner can still restore the domain, usually for a $80 to $200 registry fee. Once it enters pending delete, restoration is no longer possible and the registry has queued the name for release, typically five days later on a schedule that registry publishes. The practical difference is that redemption is still the owner's to fix and pending delete is not.
Can Domainyze guarantee I get a domain when it drops?
No service honestly can. We are a detection tool, not a backorder or auction service: we alert you at the second of release so you can register the name yourself at standard price, with no broker fee. For heavily contested names a drop-catching service with registry connections will usually win. For the long tail, a fast alert is enough.
How is this different from an uptime monitor?
An uptime monitor tells you the site is already down. Domain monitoring watches the causes: an expiring registration, a lapsing certificate, an unexpected nameserver change. Most of them produce no downtime at all until it is far too late to act cheaply, which is exactly why nothing else notices them.
