Understanding Domain Scanning & Intelligence

Domainyze goes beyond simple availability checks. Our "Domain Intelligence" layer analyzes hundreds of signals to provide a comprehensive "fingerprint" of any domain name. This data helps you make informed decisions when acquiring or protecting domain assets.

What is Domain Scanning?

When you scan a domain or add it to your portfolio, Domainyze triggers a multi-layered analysis:

  1. WHOIS & RDAP Analysis: We extract registrar details, creation dates, and status codes.
  2. Fingerprinting: Our algorithms analyze the domain name's structure (length, word count, hyphens).
  3. Historical Data: We query historical archives (like Wayback Machine) to see when the domain was first active.
  4. Nameserver Classification: We identify if a domain is parked, hosted on a cloud provider, or using registrar default servers.
  5. Drop Cycle Detection: We track if the domain has been dropped and re-registered in the past.

Key Intelligence Metrics

1. Auction Risk (Premium Feature)

Auction risk is a heuristic calculation that tells you how likely a domain is to be snatched up by a professional "drop catcher" or moved to a registry auction if it expires.

  • High Risk: Domains registered with auction-heavy registrars or those with long active histories.
  • Low Risk: Freshly registered domains or those with inactive histories.

2. Drop Cycles & Recycling (Premium Feature)

We detect if a domain has "recycled." A high drop count indicates a domain that has been registered and let go multiple times, which can affect its SEO value or perceived quality.

3. Nameserver Type

Understanding where a domain is pointed can reveal its current usage:

  • Parked: The domain is likely for sale or unused.
  • Cloud: Hosted on infrastructure like AWS, Google Cloud, or Cloudflare.
  • Registrar: Using default registrar nameservers.

4. Word Segmentation

Our "Brain" splits joined words (e.g., bestdomainsearchbest, domain, search) to better understand the topical relevance and value of the name.

Step-by-Step: Domain Due Diligence

Before purchasing a domain from an auction or a third party, use Domainyze to perform essential due diligence:

  1. Check the "First Seen" Date: Compare the creation date in WHOIS with the "First Seen" date from our Archive integration. If the domain was created in 2024 but has archive records from 2010, it is a recycled domain.
  2. Analyze Drop Cycles: A high drop count (e.g., 5+ cycles) suggests the domain was repeatedly registered and abandoned. This often indicates the domain was used for short-term projects like spamming or PBNs (Private Blog Networks).
  3. Evaluate Auction Risk: If you are waiting for a domain to drop, check its Auction Risk. "High Risk" domains are almost always caught by services like DropCatch or GoDaddy Auctions, meaning you should prepare to bid rather than wait for standard registration.

Verifying Brand & SEO History

The history of a domain name can significantly impact its future performance. Verifying brand history with Domainyze's archive data allows you to:

  • Detect "Toxic" History: Ensure the domain wasn't previously used for adult content, gambling, or mass-spamming, which could lead to search engine penalties.
  • Verify Claims: If a seller claims a domain is "15 years old," use our First Seen metric to verify when it was actually active on the web.
  • Understand Previous Usage: Nameserver history (Parked vs. Hosting) tells you if the domain was actually developed into a website or just sat on a sales landing page.

Why This Matters

  • For Buyers: Identify "clean" domains with no history of being dropped or abused.
  • For Sellers: Prove the "age" and "authority" of your domains using first-seen data from web archives.
  • For Brand Protection: Monitor your own domains to ensure they don't unexpectedly show signs of "Auction Risk."
