It can be confusing when you perform a WHOIS lookup and it displays outdated information, especially after you've made changes to your domain. This is a common issue with the distributed nature of the Domain Name System.

1. Data Propagation Delays

  • Distributed System: WHOIS data isn't stored in a single, central database. Instead, it's spread across many different registrars and registries worldwide.
  • Synchronization: When you make a change (e.g., update contact info, renew), your registrar updates its internal records, which then need to be synced with the central registry for that domain's Top-Level Domain (TLD). This synchronization process takes time.
  • Global Updates: Finally, these updates need to propagate to all the various public WHOIS servers around the world. This entire process can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24-48 hours.

2. Caching by WHOIS Servers

  • Many public WHOIS lookup services and servers employ caching to speed up query responses and reduce server load. If you query a WHOIS server that has a cached version of your domain's old information, you will see outdated data until that cache refreshes.

3. WHOIS Privacy Services

  • If you use a WHOIS privacy protection service, the public record will show the privacy provider's information, not yours. If you recently enabled or disabled this service, it might take time for that change to reflect.

4. TLD-Specific Update Cycles

  • Different TLDs have different rules and technical infrastructures. Some TLD registries update their WHOIS records more frequently than others.

What to Do

  1. Check Your Registrar: Always consider your domain registrar's control panel as the definitive source for the most current information about your domain.
  2. Wait and Re-check: Allow 24-48 hours for changes to propagate globally. You can then re-check using Domainyze's WHOIS tool or another third-party lookup service.
  3. Contact Support: If, after a reasonable waiting period, the information in Domainyze or other public WHOIS tools still appears incorrect, and it contradicts what your registrar shows, please contact our support team for assistance. Provide the domain name and details of the discrepancy.
