Domainyze maintains a complete history of all DNS checks performed on your Portfolio domains. This audit trail helps you track when changes occurred and troubleshoot issues.

How to View DNS Check History

  1. Navigate to Portfolio:

    • Go to your Portfolio
    • Click on the domain you want to review
  2. Locate DNS Check History:

    • Scroll down to the DNS Check History section
    • This appears below the DNS Records card
  3. Review Check Details:

    • Each check shows:
      • Timestamp when the check was performed
      • Whether changes were detected
      • What DNS records were affected
      • Specific changes (additions and removals)

Understanding the DNS Check History Display

The DNS Check History shows all checks in reverse chronological order (newest first):

Checks with Changes Detected

  • Highlighted with a "Changed" indicator
  • Shows affected record types
  • Click to expand and see detailed changes
  • Added and removed records are clearly labeled

Checks with No Changes

  • Shows normal status
  • Indicates DNS records remained stable
  • Timestamp of when the check occurred

What Information Is Stored?

Each DNS check record includes:

  • Checked At: Exact date and time of the check
  • All DNS Records: Complete snapshot of all record types at that moment
  • Changes Detected: Boolean indicator if changes occurred
  • Change Details: For each modified record type:
    • Records that were added
    • Records that were removed

Retention Period

  • DNS check history is retained indefinitely for your account
  • All historical checks remain accessible as long as the domain is in your Portfolio
  • When a domain is removed from your Portfolio, its DNS check history is also removed

Using DNS Check History for Troubleshooting

The DNS Check History is valuable for:

1. Incident Investigation

  • Pinpoint exactly when an unexpected DNS change occurred
  • Correlate DNS changes with website or email outages
  • Provide evidence for security investigations

2. Compliance and Auditing

  • Demonstrate when configuration changes were made
  • Maintain records for regulatory compliance
  • Document DNS management practices

3. Rollback Information

  • See previous DNS configurations
  • Reference old record values when rolling back changes
  • Verify that a rollback was successful

4. Pattern Recognition

  • Identify recurring unauthorized changes
  • Detect patterns in DNS modifications
  • Track provider-initiated changes

How Often Are DNS Checks Performed?

DNS check frequency depends on your subscription tier and domain status:

  • Checks run automatically on a schedule
  • No manual trigger is required
  • The "Last checked" timestamp shows when the most recent check completed

For more details, see How DNS Monitoring Works.

Limitations

  • DNS check history is available only for Portfolio monitoring type
  • Domains with other monitoring types do not have DNS checks
  • DNS checks capture only publicly visible DNS records
  • Internal or private DNS zones are not monitored
