Why Expiration Date Is Wrong on Some TLDs

Domainyze strives for 100% accuracy in reporting expiration dates, but due to the complexities of the global domain system, occasional discrepancies can occur, especially with certain Top-Level Domains (TLDs).

Common Reasons for Discrepancies

  1. TLD-Specific WHOIS/RDAP Structures:

    • Different TLDs (especially many country code TLDs - ccTLDs) have unique WHOIS/RDAP server implementations and data formats. Our system parses these varied formats, but sometimes an unusual format can lead to misinterpretation.
    • Some registries might only provide the "update date" rather than a clear "expiration date" in their public records, requiring more complex interpretation.
  2. Date Format Inconsistencies:

    • Expiration dates in WHOIS records can be presented in a multitude of formats (e.g., YYYY-MM-DD, DD-MM-YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY). While our system attempts to normalize these, an obscure format can occasionally cause parsing issues.
  3. Registrar-Specific Practices:

    • Some registrars might not immediately push all renewal data to the registry's public WHOIS server, leading to a temporary discrepancy between what you see in your registrar's panel and public records.
  4. Grace and Redemption Periods:

    • After a domain technically expires, it enters grace and then redemption periods. Public WHOIS might not always explicitly state these transitional statuses, making the "true" expiration more ambiguous.

What to Do

  1. Trust Your Registrar: Always rely on the expiration date shown in your domain registrar's control panel as the authoritative source. This is the date that dictates your renewal options.
  2. Report the Discrepancy: If you find a significant and persistent discrepancy between Domainyze and your registrar for a specific TLD, please contact Domainyze support. Providing the domain name and the conflicting dates will help us improve our parsing for that TLD.
  3. Allow for Propagation: If you've just renewed, allow 24-48 hours for changes to propagate through the WHOIS system before assuming an error.

We are continuously working to improve our parsing logic for all TLDs to minimize such discrepancies and provide you with the most accurate information possible.
