When a domain expires, it doesn't immediately disappear from the internet. Instead, it typically enters a multi-stage lifecycle designed to give the original owner opportunities to renew it before it becomes publicly available again. Understanding this process is key to preventing accidental loss of your domains.

The Domain Expiration Lifecycle

  1. Expiration Date: The official date the domain registration ends. At this point, the domain might stop resolving, and associated websites/emails may go offline. Most registrars offer a grace period after this.
  2. Registrar Grace Period (0-45 days): Many registrars provide a grace period (typically up to 30 or 45 days) immediately after expiration. During this time, the original owner can usually renew the domain at the standard price without penalty.
  3. Redemption Period (30 days): If the domain is not renewed during the grace period, it typically enters a 30-day "redemption period." The original owner can still renew it, but often for a significantly higher "redemption fee" charged by the registrar.
  4. Pending Delete (5-7 days): After the redemption period, the domain enters a "pending delete" status for about 5-7 days. During this time, it cannot be renewed by the original owner. It's effectively queued for deletion from the registry database.
  5. Dropped/Available: Once the pending delete period ends, the domain is "dropped" by the registry and becomes publicly available for anyone to register on a first-come, first-served basis. This is often the point where drop-catching services try to register them.
